Theory Into Practise// Development Pages

After the crit I realised that there is no reason why I am making a newspaper and there is no reason why semiotics should be in such a publication! I thought hard about it but couldn't come up with another publication I wanted to do. I thought that this newspaper could be a paper that floats around the underground for example. Like the 'Metro'. From learning graphic design I never thought about signs and I am sure that people who are using public transport or the airport would find the publication interesting.

I have been working on two of the pages inside the publication. The black cirlces will soon be filled with pictograms of different things like the toilet sign or the sign for the stairs. The pages will talk briefly on how we look at these signs and understand them. I want to do a small paragraph on 'the arrow'. The arrow is by far the most legible sign in semiotics. Depending on where it is pointing it means something different.

I'm tempted to use this ^^

What I like most about this brief is I am not using photoshop which has been a goal of mine all year! I have used the pen tool all today and it was quite nice to have a small tutorial from Abbas too. Although all these signs took me a very long time I felt my self becoming quicker with the whole process.

These two pages are finished! I just need to do a spell check and it shall be complete. I have quoted a lot from David Crow's 'Visual Signs' so that need to be mentioned somewhere in my publication. I worry that I won't be able to get this printed.....I have no more print slots and if I want to go through with my original plan and print with the Newspaper Club I will have to have this sent of by the latest tomorrow afternoon. ( that being 14/5/12). I am going to try and print down the road as thats my only chance. I am really starting the feel the stress. If I didn't have to worry about printing I would be cruising through towards the end of the year feeling light!

I keep on thinking about how many pages will be in my newspaper and I'm not sure if there will be many! However, thats not a huge problem. As long as a get the basics of semiotics across boldly I feel it will be fine. I am enjoying this project though. It's nice when your are learning while designing. Its almost like I am revising semiotics. This design I am doing above is heavily influenced by a design made for the gardian. I am using a similar design to theirs and I am quoting a lot too. I worry about the white space in the middle though.
Different layout-

Before I had theries at the end (of what I have so far) and 'the fathers of semiotics' was underneath pictograms. It works better this way

I decided to make two dashed lines come from the portraits to 'Signs'. It makes a triangle which works with the portraits. Doesn't MEAN anything but visually it works.

SHORT ESSAY ON SEMIOTICS BY Benito Cardenas

Where the publication would go?
In a place of transport!!

When people are waiting in an airport or travelling people always read newspaper and thats why I am putting semiotics in a newspaper.

TO EDUCATE STUDENTS OF GRAPHIC DESIGN

After the final feedback session someone mentioned that this publication should be given to graphic design students to help them understand the subject as is something all designers need to know. All about making a design communicate something to the audience. The publication is a newspaper- Why? Well its cheap, its big so easy to fit lots of information on and finally its simply environmentally friendly. Students would really benefit from this I think and they would learn to love the paper. Theres so much you could expand on this idea and I really want to follow it through!

Finally got the publication printed and I went to the newspaper club like I orginally planned. Its cost £14 for one and its set to arrive on the day of the hand in! which is going to be a close shave put I am sure it will arrive in time. One thing I wish I had done is simply printed it in the print rooms upstairs because you can acctually print A3. It would only cost 3 pounds too. I am done a small mock up. The only thing good with going to the newspaper club is I can get a larger size, and of course it will get printed on to the nice newsprint.
