Responsive// 'The Big Sleep' Cover Design Research

This research will be about finding a cover or piece of work that I feel will suit the cover I will eventually design. I am looking for something modern that I can also make suit the content of the book. This is for PENGUIN BOOKS.

Strangers On A Train

Here is 'Strangers on a Train' written by Patrica Highsmith, the problem I am facing at the moment is there isn't a whole lot of modern day design for crime ficiton books, this type of genre for some reason was a whole lot more popluar during the early 1900s. One thing I am picking up on is the gun is very popular when looking at covers of this genre. Not something I want to do when designing my book. This book design isn't modern at all, how can I turn a cover like this. The book cover for 'The Big Sleep' is very much the same as this. hand drawn illustrations etc. Its my job to change the look of this sort of book into something much more appealing.

Penguin Books

I had a thought that maybe I could look into, I could like change the face of this cover? This is the cover associated with most of the penguin books.9

Catch Me If You Can (1980)

I think this is quite perfect. This is the DVD case for the movie 'Catch Me If You Can' starring Tom Hanks and Matt Damon. I like how modern the vector style illstraions are but how retro the the figures and overall design. Reminds me of a 1950s feel look. I think this type of illustration would work very well when designing the new cover, solid shapes and colour that will give a modern feel and an appealing look.

The Most Beautiful Book in the World (2009)

Again this has the same feel and look as 'Catch Me If You Can above'. I especially like the de-sturated look, you get the feel of a busy book about people, a book with lots happening. The design has age and character, a lot how some srceen prints look. I feel this is achieved by the grey yellow background which gives things sort of worn feel, and of course the de-saturated colours of the illustrations. I very much like the font used here, The layout is perfect and simple, this is very much down my path.

Concepcion Studios

Gig Posters for Broken Social Scene

I very much like the style of these posters. I have only just come across this studio and I am very impressed with their website. They follow a similar look throughout their work which I am fond with. They are obviously a very high end studio considering they have done posters for bands such as the one above. In Fred's workshop today he talked about thinking of the final design before even starting, when I look at these examples I just want it to look like this! It has such a modern/ old feel to it which would work perfectly for the cover of The Big Sleep. Take the top example for example. When you see the Eiffel Tower and the black and white faded colour you instantly think of a 1940s Paris. I do anyway and I'm sure others would agree. I look forward to watch the movie 'The Big Sleep" to get my thoughts going about what imagery I can involve in my design.

Head of State

The top example is for the band built to spill. What most attracts me to this design are the city blocks with their yellow windows, has a very old fashioned feel to it. Also the contrast of colours layered on top make you feel its either night time or early dawn. The San Fran poster is similair to my previous example, for example 'The Most Beautiful Book in the World. Blook colours shaped and put together to give this lovely old feel.

Super In the City & Super Pillars of Wisdom

'Super In The City' is very unique and bold. I get the impression is about secret love or affairs between couples. The hand creeping out the window to drop the keys down to the woman below makes me think this. The bricks work well with this design too because they aren't over the top, if the whole design had brick work it would become some what un-legible and cluttered. Only thing I'm not too sure is the placement of the name 'Daphine Uviller, but what do I know. Below is the design for the book 'Seven Pillars of Wisdom' and this is similar again to some of the examples again. I can sense that this will end up being a look a try and accomplish within my design and that, to me, is a good thing. Only thing is I wish Head of State did do on their website is show a bit more, I would very much like to see the back and spine of the books to get an idea of how they display text, how they work with layout etc.
