Context of Practise// Evaluation

Evaluation for Module OUGD501

What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

The main skill I have learned during this module is putting my research and essay into a design. I feel that my essay and publication go hand in hand and work perfectly together. Trying to find a connection between the written work and the design side is always a challenge, one I feel I have accomplished. One thing I have gained is my skills on is Illustrator, being able to use the program confidently has shown in
my work. When comparing to last years COP publication I spent ages production vector shapes, this is something I can quickly and confidently do now.

What approaches to methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

After the essay was complete, I had to think what it was I was going to do. I wasn’t sure I wanted to stick with panopticism but after some research I realised this was the best idea to run with. Considering my essay had a lot of useful information inside I felt very comfortable. However, I ended up researching heaps more, I had to look into the facts and figures of my chosen subject. In terms of design development I worked out early on that I wanted go with a booklet as this was the best way of conceiving all of my information. I began looking into icons and info-graphics. I knew this would be the best way of making my booklet understood by any reader. The info-graphics and icons also made the book more visually pleasing and easy to read.

What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

I believe the main strength I have discovered in this module is editorial work. Editorial has been a type of design I have loved doing and coming back to. The format always stays the same though so next time I intend to create more interesting formats to create more interesting work. That and working with layout, always really enjoy finding different ways of filling a page.

What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

My printed version of my final publication I am not satisfied with; because I left it too late this meant I couldn’t get it professionally printed from Issuu. I wanted to print from Issuu because they specialize in printing books and your guaranteed a good outcome. I had to print in college and because of the busy digital print room decided it best to print on my own stock in the studios. This was easier said than done and after many attempts the publication was either the wrong format or the ink didn’t agree with the stock. It was then I decided to queue for a long time outside digital print. After all that, I managed to print on matt which was then laminated. The pages where too thick and this resulted in the pages not working well together. Binding was a nightmare too.  I could have saved time and money by getting it printed properly. I guess this comes down to my time management, I must make it a main priority of mine to know exactly how, where and when I am going to print my work.

Identify things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

·      Time management, from the above you can see where I am coming from.
·      In terms of my essay: work on it over a long period of time, my first draft was rushed and half finished, this meant over the Easter break I spent a very long time on it.
·      Book print slots in advance, such a standard thing to do yet I’m always too late, this means I will be able to make my work look professional once printed.
·      Get my work crited more! I got my work crited quite a lot this time round and it really helped, next time I want to get it crited even more for better outcomes.
·      Make more design sheets: This way I can get what is in my head out on to paper and by doing this everything will be much clearer.
